Frequently asked questions
Short answers to the questions people actually ask.
Questions
- Is it free?
- Yes. There's no paid plan and no account.
- Do links expire?
- No. A short link keeps working, and its code is never reused for something else.
- Can I change where a link points?
- No. Without accounts there's no way to prove a link is yours, so links can't be edited. Make a new one instead.
- Can I delete a link I made?
- Not yourself, for the same reason. If a link points somewhere it shouldn't, report it and it can be disabled.
- Can I choose the short code?
- No. Codes are generated, which stops anyone claiming popular words anonymously.
- Do you track clicks?
- No. Following a link records nothing and sets no cookie.
- How do I see where a short link goes without opening it?
- Put a + in front of the code, like linkmint.org/+abc12. You'll see the full destination and can decide whether to continue.
- Are my tracking parameters kept?
- Yes, exactly as you pasted them. Query strings aren't re-encoded or reordered.
- Is there a limit?
- Each connection can make 10 links an hour, to keep the service from being used for spam.
- Why was my link refused?
- Links can only point at http:// or https:// addresses, can't point back at this site, and can't point at domains blocked for abuse.
- How do I edit my bio page?
- Open the private edit link you were given when you made it. That link is the only way in, because there are no accounts or passwords.
- I lost my bio page's edit link. Can you send it again?
- No. Only a one-way hash of the key is stored, so nobody, including us, can recover it. You can make a new page under a different name.
- Can I upload images to my bio page?
- Not directly. Image blocks link to an image hosted elsewhere, by its https:// address.
- Are QR codes stored anywhere?
- No. They're drawn in your browser and downloaded from there. Nothing you type into the generator is sent to us.
- Will my QR code stop working?
- A QR code made here holds its content directly, so it keeps working as long as what it points to does. For a long web address, shorten it first so the code is less dense.
- I received a suspicious short link. What should I do?
- Don't open it. Check where it goes with the + trick, and report it. No account is needed.
